Guess What? A Sense of Belonging Might Be the Missing Piece in Your Nursing Career

In my years as a nurse and later as a nurse leader, my journey has been filled with excitement, challenges and countless moments of curiosity that led to growth. But when I reflect on my experiences, nothing compares to the sense of belonging that made me feel confident in my colleagues and leaders and trust in my environment while providing the best care to my patients. These reflections made me realize that feeling part of a nursing community is integral to feeling whole and making a meaningful difference.

Lessons I Took from Others That I Think You Should Know:

  • Listen Intently: True belonging starts with active listening. When we genuinely listen to our patients, colleagues and even ourselves, we create a space where everyone feels valued and understood.

  • Support One Another: Nursing can be demanding, but the load feels lighter when we uplift each other. Celebrate the wins, share the burdens and stand together in the face of challenges.

  • Embrace Vulnerability: It’s okay to admit when you need help or are unsure. Vulnerability fosters trust and deepens connections within your team.

  • Stay True to Your Values: Aligning with your core values strengthens your sense of self and helps you find like-minded individuals who share your passion and commitment.

Building a Culture of Belonging:

  • Cultivate Open Communication: Create an environment where every voice is heard and respected. Encourage open dialogue, where ideas and concerns can be shared without judgment.

  • Foster Inclusivity: Ensure that every nurse, regardless of background or experience, feels they have a place within the team. Celebrate diversity and create opportunities for everyone to shine.

  • Mentor and Be Mentored: Whether guiding a new nurse or learning from a seasoned one, mentorship is a powerful tool for building community and feelings of belonging.

  • Promote Continuous Learning: Encourage curiosity and provide growth opportunities. When nurses feel supported in their professional development, they’re more likely to feel connected to their work and team.

Do you belong to a supportive community of nurses?

If you feel like the road in nursing is lonely, you’re not alone. Belonging to a community of like-minded, compassionate caregivers is vital to your inspiration, curiosity and growth. Whether you’re new to nursing or have been here for a long time, empower each other with knowledge, show compassion and integrity and stay curious.
